I wanted my son to pray.
Even when the significant intellectual and developmental delays were revealed.
I wanted my son to pray.
Even when apraxia made it very challenging for him to speak.
I wanted my son to pray.
Because prayer is more than a religious practice or mindfulness exercise. It is more than a tradition at church or to ensure good luck before a game.
I grew up in a traditional Christian home. I personally accepted Christ at 14. But it wasn’t until I turned 30 and I found myself out of my home, job, and life that I knew that I learned this truth:
God wanted me to pray.
Truthfully, honestly, and always.
And I realized why.
Through prayer, I’ve received immediate peace during times of unspeakable pain. Through prayer, I’ve seen my home destroyed and rebuilt. Through prayer, I finally understand what He meant when His Word said He leads me beside still water, He moves mountains, and He makes rivers in the desert.
I’ve struggled with how to teach this powerful truth I learned to my son. And now that God has taught me a powerful tool that helps people with disabilities learn: social narratives, video-based modeling, social stories, the “How To” video that gives step by step guides to empower people with disabilities to learn, I am creating this episode.
So to my dearest Knightly, this video is for you.
And to anyone who wants to learn in their life:
God wants you, His dear child, to pray.
